Indispensability of Manolin’s Image in The Old Man and the Sea
Abstract: There are many researches on Santiago in Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.while few researches refer to its little boy Mannolin. Hemingway was proud to say that the importance of the little boy can be comparable with the old man. The paper, by analyzing the little boy’s image, proves that Manolin is an ideal and energetic boy, a love carrier and a heroism inheritor. What moves and inspires the readers is Manolin’s sympathy, affirmation, respect and worry for the old man. Meanwhile, Manolin promotes the old man’s image and the plot of the novel. All of these prove that the boy’s image is indispensable in the novel.
